Talk for Writing is an evidence-based and research-informed framework for teaching writing. It is built on the principle that children learn best when they first internalise the language patterns needed to write by ‘talking the text’ and close reading of high-quality model texts.

The Talk for Writing framework uses a three-stage pedagogy to enable children to become confident and independent writers:

1. Imitation Phase: This first phase involves getting to know the model text or texts through listening, speaking the text aloud, role-play and close analysis of vocabulary and language structures.
2. Innovation Phase: Led and supported by the teacher, pupils create their own modified version of the model text using the structures and writing techniques that they have been practising.
3. Independent Phase: In the final phase, pupils work independently to create an original piece of writing in the same genre.

For schools interested in finding out more about the Talk for Writing approach, introductory sessions are available at in-person conferences and online. Talk for Writing also has a national network of 28 Talk for Writing Centres – schools that have successfully embedded the approach and offer open mornings and visits so that teachers and leaders can see Talk for Writing in action in the classroom.

About Talk for Writing: The Talk for Writing approach was developed by Pie Corbett, a former teacher, head teacher and English inspector. The approach has been continuously developed in partnership with schools over decades and is used by schools across the UK and beyond.
