The Early Words Matter Conference is an annual conference that explores evidence-informed approaches and resources to support the development of communication, language and literacy skills in children aged 0-5. The 2026 conference will take place on Friday 27th March in London. The theme for 2026 is Science to Stories: How research transforms early words into lifelong reading.
Through a programme of key note presentations, workshops and panel discussions, delegates will have the opportunity to understand the science of literacy and the critical role of early years practitioners in supporting children’s early language development; reflect on the role of oral storytelling in children’s play; and explore practical strategies to support inclusion and promote parental engagement.
Confirmed speakers include:
- Frank Cottrell-Boyce: Waterstones Children’s Laureate and reading for pleasure campaigner.
- Professor Sam Wass: Director of the Institute for the Science of Early Years.
- Liz Pemberton: Early years anti-racist trainer and consultant, Director of The Black Nursery Manager, Training & Consultancy.

About National Literacy Trust: NLT is an independent literacy charity working with schools and communities to give disadvantaged children the literacy skills to succeed in life. The charity runs literacy programmes, CPD training courses for teachers, and provides online resources and tools to its members. It also undertakes research into all aspects of literacy and campaigns to raise awareness of literacy issues.
