BookSlam is a new competition run by the Books Council of Wales. The competition aims to promote reading for pleasure among pupils in Years 3-6 and is open to English medium primary schools in Wales. For Welsh medium and trans-lingual schools, the Gornest Lyfrau competition is also available.

BookSlam is designed to be flexible and can be run either as a whole-class activity or with smaller book groups. Schools can enter as many groups or classes as they wish.

To enter the competition, schools must:

• Choose a book to read and discuss from a recommended reading list.
• Create a promotional video for a second book chosen from the reading list.

Schools first enter a county round for the chance to go through to the national competition and the chance to win a BookSlam trophy and books for their school.

Supporting resources are available on request.

Timetable:

• The deadline for registering is mid-January.

Cost: Free, but schools will need to buy sets of books for participating pupils.
