Bookzilla is a free reading app created to encourage pupils in upper primary and early secondary to read for pleasure, whether they are already established readers or need some extra encouragement. Co-designed with teenagers, Bookzilla’s features allow users to:

  • Set their reading profile and receive tailored book recommendations.
  • Share reviews and recommendations with their friends and peers.
  • Set reading dares and challenges
  • Record and rate the books that they have read.
  • Widen their reading repertoire with the monthly featured collections.
  • Create their own ‘ones to read’ lists.

Unfortunately, the Bookzilla app is no longer available. For alternative resources to promote reading for pleasure in upper primary and secondary, see below.

Cost: Free.

Further resources:

  • Toppsta is a free children’s recommendation site that is powered by book reviews by young people. It allows children to find book recommendations from their peers and post their own reviews.
  • Track My Read® is a free-to-use online reading tracker from charity Read for Good. It allows young people to log what they choose to read, the time spent reading and to rate their enjoyment of the book. The teacher dashboard provides useful data about reading habits and the books that pupils are enjoying.
  • Bookbuzz is a subsidised book gifting and reading for pleasure programme from Book Trust that allows pupils to choose a book to take home and provides resources to help schools create a buzz around books and reading. There is a Bookbuzz Primary and Secondary programme.
  • Book clubs can be a good way to engage young readers and there are a variety of options to choose from.
