Refugee Week is a UK-wide arts and culture festival celebrating the contribution, creativity and resilience of refugees and people seeking sanctuary. Refugee Week is held every year around World Refugee Day on 20th June. Refugee Week 2026 will take place from 15th-21st June. The theme for this year is Courage.
Resources to support Refugee Week include:
- A Children & Young People Pack with activity ideas and links to resources from partner organisations.
- A Refugee Film Festival available to view free of charge during Refugee Week.
- Resources to support A Day of Welcome, an event designed specifically for schools as part of Refugee Week.

- Explore this year’s theme of Courage through reading, writing and oracy with the suite of resources for pupils aged 4-14 from the National Literacy Trust. As well as teacher guides and recommended booklists, there are free online events for all ages taking place during Refugee Week. Join author Nadine Kadaan for a series of short, daily videos to promote connection and understanding through Simple Acts with pupils aged 5-7. Writer and cartoonist RAMZEE leads a poetry-writing workshop for pupils aged 7-11 on 17th June. For pupils aged 11-14, a pre-recorded conversation between author Sita Brahmachari and poet Hamida Khoder explores how storytelling can challenge assumptions, build empathy and bring people together.
- Explore how stories can challenge stereotypes and encourage kinder and more inclusive thinking with best-selling author A.M. Dassu in an interactive workshop aimed at pupils aged 9-14 on 6th July.
- Find practical resources, insights and strategies to support EAL pupils from a refugee or asylum-seeking background from The Bell Foundation.
- Help primary-aged children reflect on the value of community with this selection of picture books, longer texts and non-fiction titles from Books for Topics.
- Find recommendations for books that explore immigration and the refugee experience in age-appropriate ways for KS1 and KS2 pupils from Books for Topics.

- Into Film offers a range of films on the theme of Refugees that are available to view with a free membership. There are films suitable for both primary and secondary pupils.
- CLPE has created free teaching sequences for a range of high-quality picture books that explore the refugee experience. The teaching notes are aimed primarily at KS2 and KS3 pupils and can be downloaded with a free introductory membership.
- Explore the refugee experience with pupils in Years 6, 7 and 8 through poetry with the free teaching sequence created by CLPE for Nicola Davies’ CLiPPA-shortlisted poetry collection Choose Love. Available to download with a free introductory membership.
- Support EAL learners in KS3/4 to read, understand and analyse the poem The Émigrée by Carol Rumens with the free teaching resources from The Bell Foundation. Available to download with their free membership.
- Download free lesson plans exploring how the media reports on refugees from Topical Talk to help pupils aged 10-14 build essential critical thinking and communication skills.
- The Red Cross provides a range of free teaching resources to promote informed discussion and help primary and secondary pupils develop empathy and an understanding of the challenges faced by refugees and migrants around the world.
- The National Education Union has a free ‘Welcoming Refugee Children to your School’ teaching resource with information about how to create a welcoming environment and tips on how to make the curriculum more accessible.
- The Hampshire EMTAS Moodle has collated a number of useful links and resources for staff working with children and families who have come to the UK as asylum seekers or refugees.
