The English & Media Centre’s summer conference takes place in London on 11th June. Aimed at secondary practitioners and subject leads, the theme for the conference is Putting Students at the Heart of the Subject!
Through keynote presentations from leading academics and a range of workshops led by teacher-educators, participants will have the opportunity to explore inclusive practices that go beyond academic needs and draw on students’ cultures, identities and unique perspectives to create a classroom environment where every student feels valued and respected.
Keynotes and Presentations:
- Respecting Readers’ Rights with Teresa Cremin, Professor of Education and Co-Director of the Literacy and Social Justice Centre at the Open University.
- Beyond the Secret Garden with Darren Chetty, Farrah Serroukh, Sami El-Janbey and Samantha Wharton.
- Embracing Diverse Student Stories Through Spoken Word Poetry with acclaimed poet/educator Peter Kahn and renowned author Theresa Lola.
Workshops:
- Supporting Autistic Learners in the Mainstream English Classroom: what English teachers need to know about autism in children and young people and practical strategies to support autistic learners and help them engage with the English curriculum.
- Oracy and Inclusion: strategies to help create a learning environment where all students are equipped and empowered to contribute.
- Class Reading for Inclusion: book recommendations and practical strategies to ensure that class reading is a meaningful and enjoyable experience for all students.
